Stress UI

What is stress incontinence (SUI)?

It's that little squirt of urine after you laugh or sneeze, or that warm gush when you cough or exercise. Often called "the laugh, cough, sneeze" incontinence, stress incontinence or LBL (Light Bladder Leakage) as it is sometimes called is just that— stressful.

LBL, is often caused by weak pelvic floor muscles or damage to the pelvic floor after childbirth, but other contributing factors include menopause, obesity, diabetes, hysterectomy, smoking, chronic coughing, and constipation. Some people even appear to have an anatomical disposition to stress incontinence-meaning if your mother had it, you may, too.

Although LBL can be stressful, there are many treatments—including simple behavioral modifications and proper exercise-for this common condition.
