Introducing our 2012 Award Winners
Women's Health Foundation is pleased to announce our 2012 Medical Activist Award Winner is Sharon Green and the 2012 Passion Award Winner is Heather Guidone.
Sharon Green is the Director of Program Development and Strategic Planning Institute for Women’s Health Research. Her former positions include serving as the first executive director of the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, the first deputy director of the Office of Women’s Health at the Illinois Department of Public Health, and one of seven co-founders of the National Breast Cancer Coalition in Washington, DC where she was Chairwoman of the “Do the Right Thing Campaign”, the first national grassroots breast cancer advocacy campaign leading to the first major increase in federal funding for breast cancer research.
The Medical Activist winner is given annually to a healthcare professional who has broken down barriers, changed medical practice, added to science or otherwise shown outstanding dedication and innovation in women’s health. Previous winners included Midwife and Sexual Health Researcher, Dr. Ruth Zielinski, Urogynecologist, Dr. Roger Goldberg, and Female Urologist, Dr. Leslee Subak.
The 2012 Passion Award Winner, Heather Guidone, is a noted champion of women’s health with a dedicated interest in female reproductive issues – specifically endometriosis and pelvic pain gynepathologies – who has served the clinical and consumer health industries for more than two decades as a writer, collaborator, consultant, and passionate advocate. Diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis at age 19, Heather endured constant surgeries and therapies, which, quickly shaped her life’s direction for the better as she became one of the leading global advocates for endometriosis. As the Surgical Program Director of the country’s leading treatment center and her position on the Board of Directors of the Endometriosis Research Center, Heather has spent two decades striving to positively impact others who cannot find their voice.
The Passion award is given annually to a “Survivor” and a “Pelvic Floor Champion”: a woman who has overcome pelvic conditions through personal effort and found strength through pelvic wellness and lifestyle changes.
The winners will accept the award on Thursday, June 7th at Below the Belt: Fighting for Women’s Pelvic Health, Women’s Health Foundation’s 5th annual fundraising event. Below the Belt attracts more than 400 guests for appetizers and cocktails, a performance by Multi-Grammy® award-winning artists Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski, and an exciting live and silent auction. We are so excited to announce that singer, fiddleplayer, and songwriter Alison Krauss and singer/guitarist from Union Station, Dan Tyminski will perform a private acoustic set at this year’s Below the Belt (BTB). Alison has won 27 Grammy® awards, the most of any solo female artist in any genre of music. You may recognize her voice from such classics as When You Say Nothing at All, I’ll Fly Away, and Down to the River (To Pray) from the renowned O’Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack.
